Starting from the abbey's outer gates, walk to the right of the large
pool and take the tarmac road to Consuma. Proceed for about 200 m to
the beginning of a short track on the left which leads to the Cappella del Masso del Diavolo
(Devil's Rock Chapel) (1).
Retrace your steps along the same track and once you reach the tarmac
car park next to the abbey, turn left and follow the directions to the
Paradisino hermitage. After a short, gentle uphill stretch you reach
the old paved track that will take you to the Cappella di S. Torello (St
Torello's Chapel) (2) past the bridge over the Vicano
stream.
You continue uphill on the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs) also known as the
Rampa del Paradisino (Paradisino Staircase) along which you will see,
in the following order, Cappella del Masso di S. G. Gualberto (the Chapel of St
John Gualbert's Rock) (3) ...
... the Cappella delle Colonne (the Chapel of Columns) (4), ....
... and the
Cappella del Beato Migliore (Blessed Migliore's Chapel) (5)
.
Continue uphill until you get to the Paradisino where you should stop
for a while to admire the magnificent view over Vallombrosa, the forest
and the Arno valley. You then descend on the Secchieta Vallombrosa
tarmac road for about 300 m. When you get to a bend you will see a
short paved track to the left; take the track uphill and you’ll
immediately catch a glimpse of the Cappella
del Faggio Santo (Chapel of the Holy Beech Tree) (6).
Retrace your steps down to the tarmac road and continue for 50 m
towards Vallombrosa. When you get to a wide right-hand bend you will
see a large unsurfaced area on the left. An old, paved track leads off
from this area: take it and follow the Chapel Walk signs to the Cappella di S. Caterina (Chapel
of St Catherine) (7).
Take the Saltino Vallombrosa road again, heading towards the Abbey, and
after a few hundred metres you reach the Cappella di S. Girolamo (St
Jerome's Chapel) (8).
Take the straight avenue that leads from the abbey gates and goes
downhill towards the valley. At the first bend go to the right and take
the paved track with the sign "Tosi - S. G. Gualberto". Keep to the
right and continue downhill; cross over the tarmac road, continue
downhill for a few metres to the Cappella
della Fonte di S. Giovanni Gualberto (Chapel of St John Gualbert's
Spring) (9).
With your back to the Chapel, go to the left down the forest trail for
about 200 m: keep on following the signs and take the easy track that
goes uphill to the tarmac road. Cross the road and continue on the
paved track until you reach a stone pillar topped by a cross, the Croce della Peste (Cross of the
Plague) erected in 1790. As you proceed gently uphill you
reach the Tabernacolo di
S. Sebastiano (St Sebastian's Tabernacle) (10).
The track soon meets the avenue leading to the abbey, where your walk comes to an end.
